This is my entry to the Penguin Random House 2016 book cover design competition. A Clockwork Orange is a modern classic that asks questions about the violence and disaffection prevalent in society. I wanted to combine a minimalist aesthetic with a strong association with the story, while avoiding obvious references to Kubrick's 1971 film. The pattern in the background is taken from a sheet of mechanical piano music, namely Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' which features strongly in the book. The main image is an illustration of Disraeli, whose mask Alex wears in the book when enacting his worst crimes. This was treated as an anaglyph, where the same image is layered in red, blue and yellow to create a 3D effect. This is a reference to both Alex's drug-laced 'moloko plus' but also the nausea he experiences after the Ludovico technique, when confronted with sex or violence.
